PROVENANCE Private collection, Brittany Georges Mathieu Georges Mathieu was born on January 27, 1921 in Boulogne-sur-Mer and died on June 10, 2012 in Boulogne-Billancourt. Born into a family of bankers, he initially studied law, but abandoned it in 1942 to devote himself to the visual arts. After working as a teacher for a few years, he embarked on an artistic career. In the aftermath of the Second World War, Europe was being rebuilt. Pictorial art was undergoing a transformation. Georges Mathieu creates works by applying paint directly to canvas with a tube. In 1947, the art critic Jean José Marchand defined Georges Mathieu's canvases, referring for the first time to the notion of "lyrical abstraction". In 1957, Georges Mathieu spent several months in Japan, where he became deeply interested in the art of calligraphy. He drew inspiration from this ancient traditional practice to build his composition from abstract signs, concentrating on gesture. He strips these signs of meaning to demonstrate that their understanding comes from a mental reconstruction by the reader, not from the forms themselves. Coming from a family of bankers, he first studied law, which he abandoned in 1942 to devote himself to the plastic arts. Georges Mathieu creates works by applying paint directly on the canvas with the tube. In 1947, the art critic Jean José Marchand defined Georges Mathieu's canvases by evoking for the first time the notion of "lyrical abstraction". In 1957, Georges Mathieu spent a few months in Japan where he discovered with deep interest the art of calligraphy. He draws his inspiration from this very ancient traditional practice to build his composition from abstract signs by concentrating on gesture. He denies meaning to these signs to demonstrate that their understanding comes from a mental reconstruction made by the reader and not from the forms themselves.
