Claude Joseph Vernet (1714 Avignon - 1789 Paris) successor, active 1st quarter 19th century;
French coastal landscape with fishermen and boats at sunset.
Vernet, who was appointed to the court of Louis XV of France in 1753, influenced numerous artists with his Mediterranean, evening harbor scenes. Characteristic are panorama-like depictions with a view of the sea, a low horizon and animating staffage figures in the foreground. Oil on canvas; 38 cm x 46 cm. Probably original frame.
