[16th c. book]. [CASTELLANO (Alberto)]. Rosario del[l]a gl[or]iosa V[er]gine Maria. [On the colophon]: Venetia... impresso per gli heredi di Pietro Ravani, 1556. In-8, 253-[3] f. [sign. A-Z 8, AA-II 8], modern overlapped parchment, smooth muted spine, title painted in red and gold on upper board, slipcase (brown stain on title and following f. fading from f.32, and again on page headers from f. 230 to end; stain and hole on f.190, mq. corners in margins of f.71 to 74; slight traces of modern red ink on 7 figures; ink added or faces smudged on 9 other figures). Illustrated with nearly 200 full-page figures, the title typographed in an ornamental composition, each page framed with bands, running titles in a phylactery, bookseller's mark on last f., all woodcut. It is a testimony to popular piety, composed and published on the model of luxurious books of hours, whose success was undeniable from its first edition in 1521, to this one, probably the 10th, and on into the 17th century. Despite its wide circulation, well-preserved copies are rare: works of this type were frequently leafed through and rarely bound with care. Provenance: Capuchin convent of Loci Montis (diocese of Fermo, Marche; typographed ex-libris at foot of title, and handwritten ex-libris on f.9 r°); Pierre Bosviel (etiq. 20th c. ex-libris); old signature "Francesco Maria Dand(?)" and pen tests on v° of last f.
