ERRATUM AND ADDENDUM: 17 ILLUSTRATIONS /// APULEE. Les métamorphoses ou L'Asne d'or de L. Apulee philosophe platonique. A work of excellent invention and singular doctrine. A Paris, chez Samuel Thiboust, 1623. Two volumes in 1 large vol. in-8, [20] f. (frontispiece, dedicatory epistle to Jean de Rouen seigneur de Heunières, life of Apuleius, preface, privilege), 525 p., 352 p. (Commentary), red morocco. (Commentary), 18th c. red morocco, smooth spine, gilded title and date, fillet framed in cold on covers, interior roulette, gilded edges (stain on tail of spine and upper cover, head cap rubbed). The finest edition of Jean de Montlyard's translation, illustrated with a title-frontispiece and 15 full-page intaglio figures, including five by Crispin de Passe and ten by Isaac Briot, all in the first printing. An elegant copy from several fine libraries: Antoine-Augustin Renouard (cat., 1854, n°1913, bookplate), Baron Roger Portalis (cat.1878, bookplate), Roger Paillet (cat. particulier Bibliothèque d'un bibliophile rédigé par Henri Beraldi, 1885, n°67; signature on one endpaper). Old signature at foot of title. ADDENDUM: Washed copy with some browning; booklet S bound out of order. Illustrated with a title-frontispiece, 15 full-page figures and a plate, all engraved in intaglio, for a total of 17 illustrations. The figures consist of several scenes, each bearing a small engraved number. The numbers were formerly added in ink in the margins of the corresponding paragraphs; they remain partly visible even though the copy has been washed. As these numbers do not appear on the last 3 engravings, they were added in ink at the same time.
