Jules Salmson attended the workshops of sculptors Jules Ramey, Armand Toussaint and Auguste Dumont at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From 1859, he exhibited portrait busts and medallions at the Salon. He created statues of historical figures for monuments, including Henri IV for the Hôtel de Ville in La Rochelle and Handel for the Opéra Garnier in Paris, as well as statuettes and busts like our portrait.
