I et II) puis à Paris, chez Demonville, 1776 (vol. III). 3 volumes in-12, (xx)-329-(7 of which the last 2 are blank) + (4)-316-(4) + x-(2)-358-(2) pp. in brown marbled calf, ribbed spines with partitions and fleurons and garnet titles, filleted edges, red edges, corners a little rubbed (period binding). ORIGINAL EDITION, complete with the third and last volume published by another publisher. FATHER OF THE CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE, ABBE GERMANES was originally from Saint-Remi-de-Provence, and was successively canon of Saint-Quentin, vicar general of Saint-Brieuc and then of Rennes. After being relieved of the duties associated with the latter ministry, he lived in the community of Saint-Roch in Paris. In 1776, he was appointed vicar-general to the bishop of Sagone, with responsibility for inspecting the four royal colleges in Corsica. On his initiative, two memoirs were published in 1783 to promote the idea of re-founding higher education on the island, which would be free to organize the debate of ideas. When the French Revolution broke out, Abbé Germanès returned to his hometown, where he earned his living as an attorney. Provenance : Xavier Versini (double bookplate on each volume, his signature on p. 11 and his initials on p. 26).
