Born in Sens in 1746, Chevalier des Pommelles ended his military career with the rank of lieutenant-colonel, after taking part in the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence. In order to assess the number of men likely to serve in the French militia, the author has carried out a demographic study of the kingdom.
