Chabanon played an essential role in the aesthetics of music. He affirms the universality of music, concluding that it neither imitates nor seeks to imitate, and states this essential truth, which seems to prefigure Stravinsky's axiom: Sounds are not the expression of the thing, they are the thing itself (En français dans le texte, n°170).
