BORY DE SAINT-VINCENT (Jean-Baptiste). Voyage dans les quatre principales îles des mers d'Afrique, fait par ordre du gouvernement, pendant les années neuf et dix de la République (1801 et 1802). Collection of plates. Paris, François Buisson, an XIII (1804). Atlas in-folio, 19th-century marbled paper boards.
Beautiful atlas, complete with 58 intaglio plates and maps: animated scenes, landscape views, plants, large folding map of Reunion Island, bird's-eye view of the Reunion volcano (contemporary color proof), etc.
The author was chief naturalist on the corvette Le Naturaliste in Nicolas Baudin's second expedition of discovery to the Southern Lands. On the way to Australia, he was forced for health reasons to disembark on the island of La Réunion, where he made scientific observations and drew up several drawings and maps.
Without the three volumes of text. The atlas, originally in in-4 format, is presented here in a larger format, allowing the large view plates not to be folded; as a result, some "single" plates have been assembled in pairs.
From the library of Colonel P. Milon (bookplate).
Some light foxing. Paper losses on spine.
