Rare "sirène" dress by Thierry Mugler, "Les Atlantes" collection, spring-summer 1989
A rare Thierry Mugler 'mermaid' gown, 'Atlantis' collection, Spring-Summer, 1989
Blue label and size 42, of wet-look metallic deep-purple silk/polyester, the separate boned bodice with breast cups cut in spirals, fin-like bodice edgings and gill-like panels to the sides; the matching figure-hugging skirt with tiered gill-like panels to hips and skirt sides trained mermaid hem, bust approx 86cm, 34in, waist 74cm, 29in (2)
Glamour and fantasy are the hallmarks of Mugler's designs. For this collection he imagined an underwater world populated with sirens, their dresses constructed with gores redolent of fins and points suggestive of fins.
A similar example in blue forms part of the FIT collection.
Similar examples have been exhibited in: "Mugler couturissime" musée des beaux art de Montréal 2019, Musée des arts décoratifs Paris 2022, Brooklyn Museum NY. 2023.
