Matthäus MERIAN I (1593-1650) Carosel fait à la Place Royalle à Paris le V.VI.VII Avril M.DC.XII, 1612 Black engraving Size: 39.5 x 50 cm Size with frame: 62 x 71 cm "The carrousel of 1612 is certainly one of the most famous carrousels held at European courts during the Ancien Régime. A splendid display to celebrate the marriage alliance between France and Spain, it consecrated the power of Marie de Médicis in the heart of the Place Royale, now the Place des Vosges. [...] Consecrated as an unparalleled triumph, the 1612 carrousel spawned numerous publications: prints and placards, official relations and seditious libels. And it was at the heart of this process of putting images into writing that its posterity was situated." (M. Baudière, "La fortune gravée et imprimée du carrousel de 1612", Chroniques de l'éphémère, INHA, online September 21, 2010).
