Sakalave bird, Madagascar Wood H. 49 cm Provenance : Pierre Langlois Collection, France This top of a funerary post originally marking the tomb of ancestors represents a bird with minimalist features. The purity of its lines is summed up to the extreme. Perched on imposing, angular, almost cubist legs, the bird's swollen crop is imbued with a sense of pride conveyed by its posture. The wings are folded sideways. The slender, beautifully curved neck announces the face with its small, pointed beak. The weathered wood attests to its age.
