Mangbetu knife, Democratic Republic of Congo Metal H. 41.5 cm A rare and beautiful example. The handle features a row of several slight horizontal incisions. The tip features a thematic iconographic motif rarely represented on knives: a fish, with an open beak, its eyes represented by circular engraved shapes, its scales finely suggested by successive, juxtaposed series of small, slightly curved engravings, creating a rhythm. The blade, blackened by use and time, is decorated with wavy motifs and, most likely, with almost erased writing. The combination of finesse and technical skill in this work of art is an unmistakable badge of power and social status.
