Two worshippers, India, Mathura, Kushan period, c. 2nd century
H. 27 cm. Speckled pink sandstone
Fragment of a doorframe featuring, on the left half, a couple of worshippers standing in a niche. The man on the left holds a garland in his right hand and a basket of flowers (puta) in his left. The woman makes the gesture of offering and veneration. They stand on a base with a balustrade motif, itself overlooking a Caitya-shaped window from which the head of a now-defunct figure appeared. The two figures would most likely have greeted worshippers at the entrance to a temple.
