American Modernism Minimalism Robert Ryman o.T., from: Six Aquatintas. 1975. aquatint in creamy white on strong Lennox-Velin, 89 x 88,5 cm (91 x 91,3 cm). Signed, dated and inscribed "A.P." and with the dry stamp "K" right below the image. Framed free-standing in the curved acrylic frame of the time. - Verso punctual brown spot, frame quite isolated with minor surface rubbing. Overall very good and impeccably beautiful. Exceptionally splendid, rich and picturesque values implementing print with clearly drawing platemark and narrow margin. Artist proof outside the edition of 50 numbered copies. - From the portfolio of the same name. - Published by Parasol Press, Ltd, New York 1975 - printed by Crown Point Press, San Francisco. - Our aquatint is a striking example of the subtle power of surface, light, and scale that define Robert Ryman's artistic output. For more than half a century, Ryman worked almost exclusively in white and on square image supports. Within this self-imposed tactical rigor - he minimally varies the type of paint used, its application, the size of the picture supports - he creates his so-called "White Paintings" and tirelessly and experimentally depicts the multi-layered facets of white. He applies the paint very thoroughly, making his works seem almost three-dimensional. What he liked about non-color was that it would not trigger any association or symbolism in the viewer, and squares because he says they do not suggest doors, windows or landscapes. "The real purpose of painting is to give pleasure. That's really the real reason." (quoted in Robert Ryman, 2007). Aquatint in cream-white on strong Lennox wove paper.
