Georges BERNANOS. Autograph manuscript, 5 pp. ¼ in-4 on school paper, [1946]. Numerous erasures and corrections. One sheet bears the number "4". An autograph note signed by Albert Béguin, April 1949, attached to the Bernanos manuscript, gives details. "Georges Bernanos. Drafts of a 1946 article about a word by R.P. Riquet on the union of the French. Successive drafts of the same text, first work, provisional and then final editing. These sheets are attached to copy no. XII of the Cahier du Rhône [absent] devoted to Bernanos. Albert Béguin". "The theme of Union is an easy one, allowing for all kinds of complacency. In the moral, social and political anarchy to which we have fallen, true union, the union that saves, cannot be achieved without constraint, because it would be too costly. Rather than raise the walls of the ruined city at the risk of living and working in a roofless house for varying lengths of time, the policy is to camp on the rubble, burning what furniture remains to keep warm [...]".
