After the naval battle lost at Les Saintes by Admiral de Grasse, Beaumarchais invites the maritime chambers of commerce to raise funds to rebuild vessels "bearing the name of the city that will pay him tribute". "In the persuasion in which I am, gentlemen, that the cities of maritime commerce will not remain behind, I beg you to kindly lay me down, in my capacity as shipowner, for one hundred louis in the subscription that I invite you to open [...]".
