Roman portrait of a girl on modern bust and base. Portrait from the time of Fulvia Plautilla, wife of Emperor Caracalla, 202 - 205 A.D., bust from 17th - 18th century A.D. H of head 26,6cm, H with bust and base 60,1cm, W with bust 35,8cm, D with base 20,5cm. Head and bust of white, fine crystalline marble, base of gray to reddish marble. Head broken at neck, nose replaced, part of right ear missing, bumps to head, bust and base, back edge of base broken. Ex Bonhams Auction London October 5, 2001, lot 137; previously owned by a French composer, acquired for them in the 1940s; based on the bust, probably from a French collection of the 17th - 18th centuries A.D. Cf. the portrait of Fulvia Plautilla in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples 6189.
