Attic red-figure bell crater. 400 - 380 BC. H 33,4cm, ø 33,6cm. On the front, in the center, a woman with tympanum surrounded by three satyrs harassing her, on the left a prancing maenad. At the back three cloaked youths. Details in white. Painting rubbed on reverse, otherwise intact. In an Austrian private collection since 1952; formerly the Hager Collection, acquired around 1920. The scene is strongly reminiscent of depictions of Amymone beset by satyrs. See, for example, the krater Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna 1011 (Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum 3 pl. 117, 3-6; Beazley Archive Pottery Database 215306). However, Amymone is usually depicted with a water vessel. Perhaps, however, this is a satyr play from the theater that took on the subject matter. For example, we have knowledge of Aeschylus' Amymone, which was performed in 463 BC, but is unfortunately lost today.
