17th century Spanish school. "Christ carrying the cross". Oil on canvas. In need of restoration. Frame from the 19th century. Measurements: 64 x 45 cm; 73 x 55 cm (frame). Devotional painting of passionary theme and Spanish Baroque school, in which Christ is represented in half body carrying the cross. In a closed composition, the figure emerges from a dark background and a studied illumination defines his suffering and spiritual features with rich contrasts. Subtly veiled with emotion, Christ's eyes convey an inner, mystical vision, concerned with the future of humanity. Drops of blood run down his forehead, punished by the thorns of the crown. The naturalistic pathos of the face also emanates from the hands with their deftly turned fingers.
