Porcelain covered square incense burner with polychrome decoration in green family enamels of playing children, servants and cranes, the base decorated with flowers and green trellis, the handle in the shape of a Fô dog holding a cloth ball.
Late Ming dynasty, early Qing dynasty, 17th century.
For export to Japan in the 17th century. H. 13.8 cm.
A similar incense burner sold at Christie's in New York, March 29, 2006, lot 479.
A hexagonal incense burner in the same palette, also finished with a Fô dog, is in the British Museum and reproduced by Jessica Harrison Hall, Ming Ceramic in the British Museum, 2001, p. 404.
