French school of the 19th century. "Portrait of Count Claude Mithon de Senneville de Genouilly (1725-1803), squadron leader, knight of Saint-Louis and Saint-Lazare, decorated with the Order of Cincinnati". Oval-view watercolor depicting the Count from ¾ face up in uniform wearing his decorations. 15.5 x 13 cm. Under glass. Gilt frame with annotation, (partly faded), and annotation on back "this French naval officer took part under King Louis XVI in the campaign for the American War of Independence, appointed chief of squadron in 1784". Portrait reproduced on p. 220 in Baron de Contenson's "La société des Cincinnati de France et la guerre d'Amérique (1778-1783)".
