Icon representing the Virgin of Tenderness (Glykophilousa), Crete, 15th century, Gouvernataou monastery. Inscriptions in red Greek characters on the background (monograms of the Mother of God and Christ) and on the scroll held by the Child ("The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me", Luke, IV, 18). The presence, at the top, of two praying angels with veiled hands is common in Cretan illustrations of this iconographic theme. Hand-painted in the traditional manner, with egg-and-gold paint on antique wood. Modern work. 48X39cm
