Although he incorporated elements of Dutch landscape painting into his works, he found his personal style by painting landscapes that were elevated from their mundanity with a restrained yet decorative touch. His Mill in the Rain reflects the dual nature of his landscapes: the scene is real, but nature becomes a benevolent, gentle being that can affect the viewer.
