Alfred Kubin's illustrations earned him prestigious commissions in his adopted country of Germany. He worked on editions of Dostoevsky as well as the books of Elias Canetti. His extraordinary talent and popularity also meant that, although his works were denounced as "degenerate art" by the Nazi regime, he was still allowed to exhibit. The Dancing Couple bears witness to his inventiveness, which so captivated his contemporaries: the swirling lines of their skirts and their lively facial expressions captivate the viewer's gaze to the painting, allowing him to share in the exuberant night.
