Matterhorn
Oil on canvas
94 x 129 cm
framed
This work, attributed to Oskar Kokoschka, shows an expressive landscape depiction of the Matterhorn - a favorite motif of the artist - which is convincing through confident brushwork and an extraordinary mood created by the counterpointing color scheme. At the time Kokoschka painted mainly plein-air motifs; he did not have a studio in Switzerland. Not at Erling/Feilchenfeldt.
Painted around 1947, the painting has a clear reference to the artist's other two Matterhorn paintings: Matterhorn I and Matterhorn II. The resemblance to Matterhorn I is almost literal and differs mainly in size. Thus, the present oil painting could have been created as a model for Matterhorn I or could be classified in the motif series as Matterhorn III.
A technical analysis of painting technique and materials by Dr. Erhard Jägers (Bornheim Labor f. naturwissenschaftliche Beratung, Pigment und Materialanalysen) is available, which confirms the date of origin around 1947. Further results from the technical analysis are that there is no preliminary drawing and that the paint was applied wet on wet, so that the final color is mixed on the canvas. The painting is about 60% larger than Matterhorn I.
Not in Winkler/Erling.
