In 1993, the year Abstraction II was created, Erwin Bohatsch's career was in steep ascent. In the years before, he had exhibited in Vienna, Berlin and New York. While he experimented with abstract expressionism in his artistic work, his reputation as an artist grew steadily. In 1993 Bohatsch dove deep into minimalism: his color palette is muted and forms are barely perceptible; he reduces his art - sometimes literally, by scraping off layers of paint - to the absolute essentials. Paintings from this period are in the Essl Collection, as well as in that of the Belvedere.
