Shakyamuni's rounded face is finely modeled with a serene expression. His bow-shaped mouth, heavy eyelids, and almond-shaped eyes beneath arched eyebrows are evocative of his contemplative state. Wavy strands of hair rise over a top knot, a sign of the his enlightened status. Compare with another Gandharan Buddha head made from stucco, sold at Christie's, New York, 13 September 2017, lot 607.
