A WOOD NETSUKE OF A MIKOSHI NYUDO ('LOOKOVER-MONK') SCARING A TRAVELLER

The tall, emaciated Mikoshi-Nyudo sneaking up on an unsuspecting traveller, and spooking him from behind, lolling its long tongue, the terrified man cowering on the ground, a large tabako-ire (tobacco pouch) with a mushroom netsuke hanging from his waist; signed Shidemaru. 8.3cm (3¼in) high.
