WOODEN NETSUKE DEPICTING A KAPPA ON A CLAM By Suketada, Takayama, Hida province, early/mid 19th century A WOOD NETSUKE OF A KAPPA (WATER SPRITE) ON A CLAM By Suketada, Takayama, Hida Province, early/mid-19th century The kappa climbing atop a large clam, attempting to extricate its right foot caught in the shell, the wood stained, the eyes inlaid, one himotoshi ringed with stag-antler; signed Suketada. 3.6cm (1 7/16in) long. Footnotes: 木彫根付 蛤に河童 銘「亮忠」 19世紀前期/中期 Provenance: William de Rham Collection. Purchased at Christie's, London, 14 November 2001, lot 107.
