WOODEN NETSUKE REPRESENTING A FANTASTIC ANIMAL HOLDING A SNAKE XIXth century A WOOD NETSUKE OF A MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURE HOLDING A SNAKE 19th century Possibly a hakutaku, the creature standing upright, dressed in a long Dutchman's buttoned coat, grasping a snake in its right front hoof, the eyes inlaid; unsigned. 6.8cm (2 5/8in) high. Perhaps an amusing parody of Dutchmen netsuke with the hakutaku standing upright wearing typical Dutch garb, as well as holding an animal (a snake instead of the usual cockerel).
