PAIR OF QUEEN'S CHAIRS OF THE LOUIS XV ERA Attributed to Louis Delanois In carved and gilded wood, the back decorated with leaning rosettes, the shoulders decorated with flowery scrolls, the armrests in whiplash, the cambered legs ending in leafy scrolls, silk damask upholstery with gold decoration on a blue background H. 103 cm (40 ½ in.) l. : 76 cm (30 in.) Provenance: Sotheby's New-York sale, November 23, 2009, lot 86; Sale Sotheby's New York, May 25, 2000, lot 351. A pair of Louis XV giltwood fauteuils a chassis a la reine, attributed to Louis Delanois Although not stamped, this elegant pair of armchairs with frame, by its general proportions and by the ornamental richness of its carvings, can be attributed to the famous carpenter Louis Delanois, master in 1761. His production is characterized by an extreme finesse of lines and by a great precision of the carved patterns; the shape of the whip-like armrests is used very regularly in Delanois' work (cfr. S.Eriksen, "Louis Delanois", F. De Nobele Éditeur, Paris, 1968, pl. XIII and pl. XIV). The strikingly naturalistic motif of joined rosettes on the back of our armchairs is characteristic of his work; it can be found with slight variations on a large number of chairs made by this famous carpenter, such as : -A suite of four armchairs from the Eleanor Post Close and Antal Post de Bekessy collection, sold at Sotheby's Paris, December 20, 2017, lot 431. -A suite of four armchairs from the former Karl Lagerfeld collection, sold at Christie's Monaco, April 29, 2000, lot 377. -An armchair from the former Seligmann collection illustrated in S.Eriksen, "Louis Delanois", F. De Nobele Éditeur, Paris, 1968, pl. XIII.
