A pair of carved walnut venetian sofas, mid-18th century
Typical of the furnishings of Venetian palaces in the mid-18th century, these large sofas, called divani da portego, were designed to be placed in a row with consoles and armchairs of the same model.
Despite their large size, the almost entirely openwork structure of the backrest gives them a great lightness and elegance.
A pair of the sofas of comparable structure, albeit of smaller size, sold at Sotheby's London, April 30, 2015, lot 899.
