Gustave COURBET (1819-1877), "Rocks and Trees near a Lake", circa 1875-1876. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. 18.4 x 25 cm (frame probably later). Provenance: Private collection, South of France. This work is attested by Jean-Jacques FERNIER, curator of the Musée Gustave Courbet in Ornans, who states, in a letter dated June 10, 1999, addressed to Mme Pascale Pavageau (Sotheby's, 76 bis, rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré 75008 PARIS) "[....] this work will be included by me in the supplement to the catalog raisonné of Gustave Courbet's work, to be published at a later date, with a date: circa 1875 1876 Esquisse de voyage dans les montagnes suisses [...]".
