August Friedrich Schenck was a French-German painter born on April 23, 1828 in Glückstadt and died on January 1, 1901 in Écouen. He was a student of Léon Cogniet and a member of the École d'Écouen. Schenck was best known for his animal paintings. He lived and worked most of his life in France. At the age of 27, he made his debut as a painter at the Paris World's Fair in 1855. He became famous for his landscapes and animal paintings, hence his probably most famous work Angoisses, an oil painting on canvas depicting a grieving ewe over the body of her lamb. The painting was shown at the 1878 Salon, where it evoked strong emotions in visitors. Schenck was also a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts. He was both French and German by nationality.
