Polychrome decoration on each side of a bouquet of barbels in a medallion formed by a row of pink pearls, standing out on a background of half barbels framed by two rows of pearls in a row, gold wolf teeth on the upper edge and wide gold fillet on the base, cracking to the body and missing at the base, small chip at the base, chips and minor wear
L. : 27 cm.
Provenance : most certainly from the " pearls and barbs " service of the Countess of Artois, delivered on April 26, 1788.
Notes:
This service included 8 bottle buckets for a value of 96 pounds each; it was a priori intended for the castle of Saint-Cloud. The design had been used previously for another service delivered to the Countess of Provence (her older sister) around December 1781-January 1782, but which did not include a bottle cooler. For a full commentary on these deliveries, see by David Peters, Sèvres plates and services of the 18th century, Little
Berkhamsted, 2015, pp. 663-664 and 869-870.
