Pair of candlesticks; Empire period, France, c. 1810. Gilt bronze. Measurements: 29 x 12 x 12 cm (x2). Pair of candlesticks made in bronze with the same design. Both are supported on a circular base from which the foot of the shaft is decorated with a set of human feet. The shaft does not represent bodies, but has a flat circular-perimeter finish that widens its perimeter in height. The column is topped by a capital with four identical faces showing a female face with curly hair, adorned with a headdress. Finally, the wick takes the form of a classical cup. Candlesticks of this type were very common in the First Empire and, because they were inspired by them, in the Second French Empire. In both cases, the influence of classical decorative elements is clear, both in the reliefs and in the human figures on the pedestals, as is the taste for the use of symmetry and straight, clear lines.
