Italian school; early 20th century. Marble and alabaster. Damaged. Measurements: 87 x 30 x 21 cm. Neoclassical sculpture in white marble. The piece represents a young woman with her hair tied up and covered with a turban in such a way that the piece presents a slight inspiration based on models coming from the orientalism taste. The face has soft features, with the eyelids wide open, giving the face a great deal of expressiveness. The tunic, which falls from her shoulders in naturalistic drapery, exposes the neck and arms, creating a contrast of colour between the two materials. The way it adheres to the skin is somewhat reminiscent of the wet drapery technique used in Greek statuary. Antiquity is the main model for neoclassical artists who advocated a refined, proportioned and classical style. However, the piece presents elements that go beyond neoclassicism, linked to an aesthetic of a romantic nature.
