LEOPOLD SURVAGE (1879-1968) VIEW OF PORT-VENDRES, 1927 Casein on panel Signed and dated '27' lower right Casein on panel; signed and dated '27' lower right 38 X 46 CM - 15 X 18 1/8 IN. - - A certificate of authenticity from Mrs Anne-Marie Divieto, dated February 28, 2021, will be given to the buyer. - - Leopold Survage was one of the first artists to experiment with the use of casein as a medium in painting. Although its use dates back to antiquity, Survage helped popularize it. This medium appealed to the painter for its many virtues: for its ability to achieve intense, matte colors, but also for its durability and resistance to fading. However this durable medium does not accept any repentance. Casein allowed Survage to experiment with mixed media, achieving a rich, creamy texture in his paintings, which he sometimes combined with other mediums such as collage or tempera. He often used it to create smooth, uniform surfaces and to layer translucent colors. He was known for his innovative approach to painting, and the use of casein was an integral part of his creative process.
