GUSTAVE LOISEAU (1865-1935) TREES IN AUTUMN, 1911 Oil on canvas Signed and dated lower left Oil on canvas; signed and dated lower left 73 X 60 CM - 28 3/4 X 23 5/8 IN. - - The work will be included in the catalog raisonné of Gustave Loiseau's work currently being prepared by Mr. Didier Imbert. - - PROVENANCE Tajan sale, Paris, June 12, 2002, lot 29 Private collection, France - - "This painter is directly attached to the impressionist school, whose tradition he faithfully follows... The works he shows here are imbued with a very sincere feeling, and tell of a harmonist full of finesse." Arsène Alexandre, critic for the Figaro, 1901 - - Gustave Loiseau is often considered one of the main representatives of the post-impressionist movement in France. His style is characterized by vivid colors and a measured brushwork, which allow him to capture the nuances of light and atmosphere in his landscapes. Although he was influenced by the most impressionist of the impressionists, Claude Monet, Gustave Loiseau developed his own style. The former was accustomed to painting outdoors and his work is characterized by his rapid brush strokes. His paintings often focused on the reflection of light on water and the effects of light on objects. Unlike Claude Monet, Gustave Loiseau preferred to work in the studio, painting landscapes that he had previously observed. His style is more precise and his brush strokes slower and more calculated than Monet's. - Landscape is a central theme in the work of Gustave Loiseau, often considered one of the greatest landscape painters of his time. Like many impressionists, he was very attracted to waterways and found his inspiration mainly in the towns and villages along their banks, such as the banks of the Loing in Moire, the Oise in Pontoise, the Eure in Saint-Cyr-du-Vaudreuil, or the Seine in Bennecourt and Triel (see lot 14). Our painting probably represents an undergrowth of Moret-sur-Loing, where Loiseau gives life to this group of trees by the use of bright and vibrant colors specific to a season. We find a palette with autumnal colors, where the almost naked trees are illuminated by a still warm daylight. This palette is different from the one used to paint city views, such as Paris, where it is darker. - Loiseau worked closely with other post-impressionist artists, such as Paul Gauguin and Paul Cézanne, and was influenced by their use of color and light. His distinctive style is characterized by a loose, vigorous brushstroke, which gives his paintings a dynamic yet textured look. Today, Gustave Loiseau's landscapes are considered major works of modern art, and are highly regarded both for their beauty and for their eloquent depiction of nature. Considered a major figure in modern art, Gustave Loiseau's work can be found in many museums and private collections around the world. - - Gustave Loiseau is often considered one of the leading exponents of the post-impressionist movement in France.
