A pair of percussion pistols by Merolla
dating: Mid 19th Century provenance: Naples, Octagonal, smoothbore, 18 mm cal barrels with brass front sight, remains of damask pattern, remains of signature 'S. MEROLLA NAPOLI'. Tangs engraved with racemes and broad sight. Backwards spring locks slightly engraved and signed 'S. MEROLLA'. Three-quarter wooden stocks with checkered grips (one with cracks and small restorations). Iron mounts engraved with floral motifs. White metal muzzle rings with engravings. Iron ramrods. Salvatore Merolla (2nd and 3rd quarters of the 19th century) was an gunsmith from Naples, Italy. In 1860 he was awarded for his fine workmanship at the Florence Exhibition. See B.
