ARIOSTE. Roland furieux, heroic poem. Paris : Brunet, 1775-1776 [Tomes 1 à 3] ; Paris : Laporte, 1783 [tome 4]. - 4 volumes in-4, 261 x 198: portrait, (2 ff.), 222 pp. 24 plates; (1 f.), pp. (223)-388, 22 plates; frontispiece, 283 pp. 23 plates; frontispiece, (2 ff.), pp. (287)-567, 21 plates. - Tan calf, gilt roulette on boards, smooth spine decorated, gilt roulette inside, gilt edges (Gosselin). Cohen, col. 97. Beautiful edition in the translation of Louis Dussieux (1744-1805). It is illustrated with 46 plates engraved after Cochin's drawings, made especially for this edition, with special frames which are not present in the in-8 edition. Copy enriched with the portrait of Ariosto engraved after Eisen and the 46 engravings made for the Italian edition of Baskerville of 1773, engraved after the drawings of Cipriani, Cochin, Eisen, Greuze, Monnet and Moreau le jeune, all with a new frame. According to Cohen: "The figures of chants V and XII are no longer the same: the two former figures, judged not very pleasant, have been redrawn with great care by Moreau le jeune." A very fine copy in a TIME-BASED BINDING SIGNED BY JEAN-BAPTISTE GOSSELIN. His label has been glued to the verso of the first white endpaper of the first volume, indicating the address at 49 rue Saint Jacques in Paris. The 9 has been changed in ink to a 1, indicating that the bindings were made around 1800, when he moved from 49 to 41. A few traces of rubbing and spotting, not serious. Scattered foxing and several browned leaves. Provenance: Chaulieu, with manuscript bookplate dated 1815.
