Martyrdom (or Decollation) of Saint Barbara
France, Paris (?), circa 1500-1520.
Framed leaf.
Dimensions at sight : 90 x 160 mm
Good condition.
Saint Barbara was only sixteen years old when she was martyred, first locked in a tower by her father Dyoscorus (Dioscore). The tower ordered by Dyoscorus was to have only two windows, but Beard transgressed her father's authority and had a third window pierced, a symbol of her faith in the Trinity. The engraver is faithful to the legend: Dyoscorus himself beheaded his daughter who had become a Christian.
