[ENLUMINATION]. [BIBLE]. Initial P historiated. Saint Paul and his sword Leaf from a Bible. End of the Epistle to the Colossians. Beginning of the First Epistle to the Thessalonians. Tempera, gouache and gold leaf on parchment. France, Paris, second half of the 13th century (circa 1250-1275). Dimensions : 190 x 290 mm Good general condition, some stains in the margins without gravity. This leaf comes from a Bible known as the Sainte-Geneviève Bible, sold at Christie's, June 26, 1996, lot 14, already deficient (24 leaves were missing in 1996). See P. Kidd, The McCarthy Collection. Vol. III French Miniatures, no. 36, Four historiated initials on four leaves from the so-called St-Geneviève Bible [this leaf is cited on p. 140]. According to P. Kidd's survey, this leaf occupied leaf 472 in the original manuscript. In the 1996 Christie's catalog there is mention of a document dated 1224 relating to the abbey of Sainte-Geneviève, but it is not clear whether this document was an original or a facsimile inserted for paleographic comparison.
