A superb and ancient statuette in the synthetic style very characteristic of Bamboo Toro with notably its ears carved in semi-circles. It is imprinted with a sacrificial material also very characteristic of these miniature statuettes of personal altar, and clearly indicates an eloquent dance movement rarely so successful, and its vision according to the angle under which one contemplates it makes it alive.
For another miniature personal altar statuette of the same type but in a different position, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York (inv. no. 1977.394.3), see: Dogon, Musée Dapper, Éd. Dapper, 1994, p. 210.
Dogon, Mali
Wood, patina with sacrificial material, superb patina of use.
