INDIA. High relief, frieze in black schist representing a scene from the Ramayana with, in the center, a character holding a bow (Rama) and to his right a character holding a club (Hanuman), the two main heroes of the Ramayana, the sixth character from the left with a simian face is perhaps a monkey from Hanuman's army, the large face on the right may be a representation of the demon Ravana who abducts Sita, Rama's wife (who would be depicted on the extreme right of the frieze) and finally the character on the far left who seems to be holding a conch shell in his hand, which is a classical attribute of Vishnu, of whom Rama is a famous avatar.
