Spanish school; 18th century. "Infant Jesus Salvator Mundi". Carved and polychrome wood. Crystal eyes. It presents repainting in the original polychromy. On wooden base with damage. Measurements: 60 x 30 x 16 cm. Devotional image in carved wood, of round polychrome bulk, with natural hair, combed in ringlets. The figure of the child created with great veracity shows the anatomical forms adapted to infancy in such a way that the figure acquires a great tenderness in terms of contemplation, adding to this the treatment of the face with fine features and rosy cheeks. The Child, who looks straight ahead with a slight smile, makes the gesture of blessing with his right hand, while with the other he holds a small blue orb crowned with a golden cross. The iconography of the Child of the Ball alludes to the universality of Christian doctrine, and consists of the representation of the Child Jesus with a sphere representing the universe, placed in his hand or under his feet. It is a Triumphant Child, Saviour of the World, and symbolises the idea of Jesus as man and saviour, lord of the whole Earth, which he redeems with his death and resurrection. It is an iconography that combines divine power and grace with the happy innocence and humble condition of God incarnate: the omnipotence of the Son, being a child with the orb in his hand, like a little boy with his ball. This figuration is also characterised by the gesture of blessing and the absence of any trace of pain. The cross at the top of the ball is a symbol alluding to the universal projection of the redemptive act.
