The image of Christ crucified on a wooden Latin cross presides over the alabaster group, flanked by the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist, who are placed at the foot of the cross. This is a type of sculptural Calvary that was common in Central European Gothic art, and the model was extended into the Renaissance period. Sometimes both figures are also accompanied by Mary Magdalene. In this case, a skull is shown on a central mound of earth, alluding to Mount Golgotha and the traditions associated with this symbol in Crucifixions from medieval times. Both contain their grief in a gesture reminiscent of the tradition of the Déesis. Christ's anatomy presents a classical canon, detailed in the distension of his limbs, showing with verism tendons, fingers and bony joints. It is a four-nailed Christ, with a detailed description of the feet and hands, the wounded torso and its stigmata. He has already expired, so the body is already at rest. It is devoid of pathos and the head falls on the chest, so that the locks of hair frame a stylised and noble face in repose. The whole is harmonious, seeking symmetry and softness in the dramaturgy.
