EDWARD S. CURTIS (1868-1952)
Louise Lorraine as Jane in 'Tarzan', Los Angeles 1921
Image Size: 34,4 x 25,8 cm
Vintage silver print, blue-toned, on double-weight matte paper, in very good condition. Signed "Curtis L.A." in black ink in the image at lower right.
After Curtis had to end his extensive documentation of the culture of indigenous peoples, he lived in Los Angeles from 1919. Here the impoverished photographer also worked for the film industry, for instance he created stills to promote the movie serial "The Adventures of Tarzan", with Elmo Lincoln playing the main character. He used a sandwich montage to set actress Louise Lorraine in her animal skin dress against a backdrop of overbearing tree trunks, for the movie serial "The Adventures of Tarzan". The image conception corresponds less to the style of the Hollywood glamour photography that had just emerged, but is more reminiscent of Curtis' pictorialist landscape shots with indigenous hunters gazing into the distance.
