Born in the 19th century in Paris, Julia Marest studied painting with Henri Gervex and Charles Chaplin, who was also Eva Gonzales' teacher. She exhibited at the Salon de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts from 1875. For her first participation in the Salon des Artistes Français, in 1881, the artist presented a painting entitled La Roussotte, listed under the catalog number 1526. This title and the centrality of female representations in the artist's work evoke the figure of a young redheaded girl similar to the one in our composition. Our work, particularly accomplished, could be this reception piece.
The same year, alongside La Roussotte, are exhibited works by the greatest names of the second half of the 19th century. Among them, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Jules Bastien-Lepage, Giovanni Boldini, Eugène Boudin, William Bouguereau, Félix Bracquemond, Alexandre Cabanel, Edouard Manet, Auguste Renoir or Henri Fantin-Latour.
Julia Marest became a member of the Society in 1883 and continued to participate annually in the Salon until 1887. With a total of ten works exhibited, she was finally awarded a medal in 1885.
